Mumbai High Court holds the pride of place as one of the oldest high courts of our country. The High Court was established in 1862 and so, its 150th year celebrations were held in 2012. 

Though Mumbai High Court is being lauded as one of the best managed courts in the country, it also faces the problem of backlogs and arrears. Efforts are on to clear the backlogs but, according to experts, it may take decades for clearing the arrears. 

Computerization of case records was done in Mumbai High Court much earlier than in other High Courts. This has certainly given a fillip to the working of the court. Periodical training is being given to the staff of the court so as to mentor them suitably for handling their work expeditiously. Skilled employees are being recruited and deployed for managing the case records. 

These steps have become necessary because prior to computerization, lawyers and judges were finding it extremely difficult to get the details they wanted. This used to cause a lot of frustration for the litigants. Since judges could not get the information they wanted on time, they faced huge problems in disposing of the cases. 

Now that a lot of streamlining has taken place in the Mumbai High Court, litigants, lawyers and judges may not face such problems any more. Further, a number of training programs like Advanced Training Course in Arbitration, Securities Law Course, etc. are being organized at the Government Law College. These courses will help lawyers to find out quick solutions to various cases that reach the court.
