More about Wat Chedi Luang (วัดเจดีย์หลวง), Chiang Mai and Historical Information

Wat Chedi Luang is Chiang Mai’s most important temple. It is located in the ancient walled part of the city. It initially consisted of three temples, which were later merged into one. The most striking feature of this temple is the magnificent Chedi (pagoda).

There are two viharans in the temple grounds that were built in 1928. The first viharan is large and grand having three tiered roof and golden front façade. The red ceiling is supported by two tall round pillars. Opposite to the entrance there is a large standing image of the Buddha named Phra Chao Attarot. It was cast around the end the 14th century. The other viharan is small but elegantly decorated with intricate wood carvings. There is also a Burmese style Pavilion next to it.

There is a small building that houses the city pillar (Sao Inthakin). According to the legend Sao Inthakin was brought by guardian spirits from heaven and is the protector of the city. Nearby there is a small shrine dedicated to these holy spirits. There are three massive Dipterocarp trees besides the shrine, they are also believed to be protectors of the city. There are also other buildings on the temple grounds. The notable ones include the Reclining Buddha image and a bell tower, and the Wat Phan Tao temple.
Though the temple has lost much of its grandeur and is in ruins but it is a place worth visiting and relishing its timelessness.
