More about Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (วัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ), Chiang Mai and Historical Information

Wat Phra That is located atop Doi Suthep (Mount Suthep). It was built in 1383 under King Keu Naone. It was built as a Buddhist monastery and still functions as the same. The most striking feature is the gold-plated Chedi, topped by a five-tiered umbrella erected in honour of independence from Burma. It can be seen from far away. It is considered as the most sacred temple in the Thailand. According to the legend, The Lenna king was instructed by a visiting monk from Sukhothai to take the twin miraculous relic to the mountain and construct a temple. The king mounted the relic on a white elephant, which was released in the jungle. The elephant stopped at the top of mount Suthep, trumpeted three times and died. The temple was built on the spot.
The golden Chedi is where the Buddhist relic enshrined. The walls around the Chedi form a mini enclave and are heavily decorated with murals and shrines. The copy of the famous Emerald Buddha statue can be seen here. Thousands of pilgrims flock here to see the relic and pay their respect. On clear days, one can see a picturesque view of the city and the surrounding regions. The temple can be reached by climbing 309 steps which have spiritual significance. Elderly and less fit can use the elevator.
