More about Chennai High Court, Chennai and Historical Information

The functions of the Chennai High Court are administration of justice and all the related functions and also administering the subordinate judiciary pertaining to Tamil Nadu State. There are several rules following which the court discharges its functions.

For carrying out these functions, case records and relevant registers are maintained. With the help of a computerized information center, the histories of all the cases including those that have been filed and that are pending in the court are maintained.

The Honorable Chief Justice of the Chennai High Court does not function alone. He or she is ably assisted by other judges and several other committees that have been constituted.

All the case records are being maintained in digital form since 2002. Hard copies of the judicial records are available in the information center. If litigants want judicial records, they can get the photocopies of the judicial records from the information center. Even certified copies of judgments and judicial orders are processed and made available to litigants for which computerization is helping a lot.

Public can know important judgments as well as judicial orders through the Internet. But, the general public cannot access the Chennai High Court Library. It is meant for the use of honorable judges only.

As is the case with other courts, there are lots of cases pending in the Chennai High Court also. Unless focused efforts are taken by the Supreme Court in consultation with the Union Government, this problem cannot be overcome. There may be a need for additional judges as well as additional staff. Infrastructure has to be developed accordingly. The court may need enormous funds for carrying out this uphill task. So, concerted efforts have to be taken for surmounting the problem of clearing the backlogs of cases.
