More about Vishnupad Temple, Gaya and Historical Information

The Vishnupad temple is situated beside river Falgu. Legend has it that Lord Rama along with his wife Sita, had visited the temple, which dates back to thousands of years. However, the modern structure was built in the year 1787. The place is particularly religious as people believe that Lord Vishnu had left his footprint into a block of basalt. The rock is named Dharmasila, by the believers of the Hindu religion.

Legend says that Gayasura; a demon, asked the Gods for a boon. He wished anyone who saw him must attain Moksha or salvation. According to ancient sacred texts, Lord Vishnu sent Gayasura to the underworld (Pataal-lok) by placing his right foot on the devil’s forehead and pushing him with all his divine strength. Once the demon was transported under the earth’s surface, Lord Vishnu’s foot print is said to have left a permanent mark on this area. The true serenity of the place can be experienced when the heat is low, especially during the month of September to January.
