    Sarnath is located in the north-eastern part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the four major holy Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Sarnath was the place where Lord Buddha first delivered his teachings about his faith of Buddhism. This first sermon, in 528 BCE, was given to his first five disciples who had accompanied him on his ascetic life, after he attained enlightenment or nirvana. This spot, located in a deer park, is now commemorated by the Dhamek or Shanti Stupa. It signifies the seat of ‘the holy Buddha’. It is 34m high and 28.3m in diameter. It was built by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka who was a follower of Gautama Buddha. It has since been enlarged on six occasions. The lower portion is built with beautifully carved stone while the borders have intricately carved figures of birds, flowers and humans, as well as inscriptions in the Brahmi script. Along with the construction of this stupa Emperor Ashoka also laid the foundation of Buddhist Sangha in Sarnath. Besides the Dhamek Stupa, Sarnath also has the Ashoka Pillar, the Dharma Chakra of which is now a national emblem, the ruins of the Dharmajajika Stupa and the Sarnath archaeological museum.
