Sri Jagannath Temple is one of the most holy temples of Hindu religion devoted to Lord Jagannath. The temple is situated in Puri, Orissa in India. The word ‘Jagannath’ evolved from the word Jagati and literally means Lord of the Universe. Jagannath is considered one of the main destinations of Char Dham Yatra in India. Lord Krishna, Balabhadra and goddess Subhadra are worshipped at Sri Jagannath temple.
Sri Jagannath temple is constructed over an area of 400,000 sq ft. and surrounded by a high fortified wall. This wall is known as Meghananda Pacheri. There is another wall which surrounds main temple and is known as Kurma Medha. Lord Jagannath temple is divided into four main structural parts:
- Deula Vimana or Garba Giraha
- Mukhashala
- Nata Mandir
- Bhoga Mandapa
Offerings to lord Jagannath are made six times a day at Sri Jagannath Temple. In the morning Lord Jagannath is offered breakfast known as ‘Gopala Vallabh Bhoga’, next meal is served at 10 o’clock which is known as Sakala Dhupa, next meal is known as Bada Sankhudi Bhoga and is served in bhog mandapa. Madhyanta offering is made at noon, Sandhya Dhupa is offered in the evening at around 8 o’ clock. The last meal of the day offered to Lord Jagannath known as Bada Simhara Bhoga.
