More about Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi and Historical Information

The location of the Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi is very impressive because it is situated in the lush green surroundings of the Teen Murti Bhavan, the official residence of Jawaharlal Nehru. A museum in memory of Jawaharlal Nehru is also being run in this premises.

Visitors to this planetarium can have a look at Soyuz T-10 that carried Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian cosmonaut, to space, his space suit and also his mission journal.

I heard that this planetarium attracts over 200,000 tourists every year. Tourists are mainly attracted by the dome-shaped Sky Theater that shows various details about constellations, planets and other celestial bodies. Visuals like cartoons, computer animations, special effects, video clippings, paintings, etc. are used in these sky theater shows.

In 2010, the planetarium was thrown open to public again after its renovation. The ’Definiti optical star projector “Megastar” that is now available here is a new attraction because it is capable of showing 2 million stars. When major solar eclipses occur, the planetarium arranges telescopes, solar filters, projection boxes, etc. so that visitors can have a glimpse of these eclipses.

Everyone should visit this planetarium because they can educate themselves and inculcate scientific understanding of heavenly bodies in the minds of their children.
