It comprises 8,161 paintings, surpassing most American museums except the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. 

    The museum was founded in 1870 in Copley Square and was later shifted to its current Fenway location in 1909. The museum sees more than 1.2 million visitors every year, making it the 52nd most visited art museum in the world.
