    In the mid-sixties a program to establish Jawahar Bal Bhavans was launched and a number of Bal Bhavans were set up in different regions from India in the mid-sixties. They were referred to as Jawahar Bal Bhavans. The Jawahar Bal Bhavan in Mandi is an expansion of the scheme that was first supported with the Nehru Memorial Fund. Rural Bal Bhavan Mandi was set in 1972, and was able to begin working from the chaupal in Mandi village, following the direction of the then PM Ms. Indira Gandhi Smt.Gandhi established the center at its present site in 1973 in which the inhabitants of Mandi gave 4.75 acres of land in the panchayat to build it and the centre was named Jawahar Bal Bhavan, Mandi.

    Its primary objective was to provide food to the children living in rural areas like Mandi, Mehrauli, Jaunpur, Gadaipur, Sultanpur, Manglapuri, Gwalpahari, Bandhwari, Asola, Aya Nagar, Ghitorni, Chattarpur, Maidan Garhi, rajpur, Satbari, Chandanhola, Fatehpur Beri, Dera, Bhatti Mines and Neb Sarai - the villages within and surrounding Mandi.
