The Karni mata temple also known as the temple of rats is found deep in the Thar Desert. This temple is also known as the temple of rats because there are thousands of rats living in it believed to be holy by Hindus. This temple has a legend to it dating back as early as 1400s about Karni Mata who promised that all male storytellers would be reincarnated as rats in the temple. The temple features intricate marble panels and solid silver carvings. It was built in the early 1900s to honor Karni Mata together with her furry and reincarnated devotees the rats. It is believed that the rats present in the temple may be around 20,000. The rats there are fed by members of the Depavats family and some of the temple devotees live permanently in the temple doing the cleaning of the temple.
Rats in the temple are fed milk, grains, and coconut shells on large metal bowls. People refer to the rats as little children or “Kabbas” the devotees here believe that eating the rat’s leftovers brings good fortune to them and those who make pilgrimage to the temple. For any visitor to see the temple in full glory it is advisable to go there late at night or just before sunrise because this when the rats are all out gathering food.
